The first time I came across these New Zealand Wool Dryer Balls, I was really confused. Firstly, its is from New Zealand? How do they actually work? How is it Eco-Friendly?
So I started doing some research and after reading some pretty good feedback about it, I decided to buy a 6-ball pack and give it a try.
Now, these balls are basically made from natural wool from New Zealand (the land where there are more sheep and cows than humans). The wool is then spun into a ball. If you splice it open, the picture below is what you will see.
What do they do?
So, instead of using fabric softener or dryer, you throw these balls into the dryer and let it run with the rest of your clean laundry load. Simple as that. Some add a drop of 2 of essential oil for its benefits and as substitute for fragrance. I did exactly this - 1 drop on each ball and my clothes comes out smelling AMAZING!How many balls to use?
They recommend that you use a minimum of 3 to 4 balls for small to medium load and all 6 balls for large loads. How exactly do they work?
They basically serve 2 main purposes.
Firstly, the natural qualities of the wool softens laundry & removes static from your clothes. The same function of fabric softener / drying sheets minus the possible effects from harmful chemicals. These anti-static properties reduce wrinkles, static cling and lint.
Secondly, when the balls are tossed into the load, they create a void between your laundry which then speeds up drying time. If the right amount of balls-to-laundry-load ratio is used, it takes about 30% - 40% less drying times. This means you save on electricity and prolong the lifespan of your dryer.Eco-Friendly?
Yes there are since I no longer buy fabric softener that comes in plastic bottles. I save on electricity which means less coal is burnt to create electricity. The balls are 100% natural wool, so they biodegrade without leaving any harmful chemicals into the earth. How long do they last?
Each ball can last up to 2-3 years or around 1000+ loads, so these balls do make one of the best eco-friendly products.
Personally, I've been using them for a little over a month now (washing every other day) with small to medium loads. So I toss 3 balls into the dryer with 1 drop of essential oil on each ball. My laundry do come out feeling soft, less wrinkly and cling static. Here is a picture of 3 balls after 1 month++ of use (left) vs 3 new balls (right).
I used to suffer horrible static when I put on those quick drying gym t-shirts. I did stop using fabric softener for a while before I started using these wool dryer balls, so I can feel a world of a difference.
I give it a 5 star+. Nothing bad can be said about it. This particular 6-ball pack from www.thegreengreenshop.com supports a small business out in Michigan, USA. Do it give a try!
